The
bloodhound is one of the only dogs that can trace its ancestry back over 1000
years. Originally brought to Britain during the Norman Invasion of 1066 BC, the
bloodhound originates from the St.Hubert hounds used for their scenting
abilities. The long ears and droopy skin, especially around the face help
"scoop" the scent towards the dogs' nose when its head down on the trail.
While bloodhounds do make a great family member they are not the dogs for
everyone. They do have a propensity for drool and several drool rags scattered
around the house may come in handy. They are a large dog and do have a tendency
to knock things off tables. And, if not kept stimulated, they will chew
everything in site! So, if you have a house full of good furniture and
knick-knacks, and you would be bothered by getting "slimed" on a regular basis,
perhaps the bloodhound is not for you. The Canadian Kennel Club recognizes 3 colour combinations: black and tan, liver and tan, and red.
The males average between 100-120 lbs. and 25-27 inches while the females are
slightly smaller, averaging between 80-100 lbs. and 23-25 inches. Despite its
portrayal in some movies and literature as a savage attack dog the bloodhound
does not attack its quarry. Nor does it live up to its other media portryal as a
lazy stupid dog. Bloodhounds are actually extremely intellegent and
affectionate, but wilfull. No amount of training will make him listen to
commands when he is "on the scent!
